If you want concert tickets to the next Def Leppard show coming to your town then you'd better act quick. The veteran British hard rockers have been a phenomenal sell out with every tour they've embarked on, and this one is set to be no exception. Def Leppard - who have sold over 65 million albums worldwide - last toured in 2009.
Def Leppard first emerged out of Sheffield in the late 1970s as part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement alongside Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Fighting against the prevailing post-punk winds of the day, Leppard helped to resurrect the classic metal style just in time for the 1980s.
Def Leppard scored a breakthrough with their second album, 1981's High n' Dry, which featured the lightning thrust of "Bringing on the Heartbreak". The follow-up, Pyromania, catapulted Leppard to the top of the rock world, with hit after hit ruling FM radio and a certain cable channel which used to play music videos. To this day the octane blasts of "Photograph", "Rock of Ages" and "Foolin'" remain classic rock staples that are known universally amongst three generations of listeners.
Def Leppard fell upon hard times in 1984 when their drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in an automobile accident. The recording of their next album proved difficult, as prolonged delays took them out of the spotlight for several years.
In the summer of 1987, the waiting proved to be worthwhile when Hysteria hit the stores. Scoring a record total of seven hit Billboard singles, Hysteria dominated the album charts for the next three years and eventually achieved diamond status for sales of over 10 million copies in the US alone. Hysteria is currently ranked as the 51st biggest selling album of all time.
Def Leppard faced more personal tragedy in 1991 when founding guitarist Steve Clark died from an overdose of drugs and alcohol. Leppard rebounded in early 1992 with the release of their fifth album, Adrenalize, but the band was soon sidelined by the onslaught of grunge.
As if to prove that you can't keep a good band down, Def Leppard struck back with their 1999 release, Euphoria, which reinstated their concert draw and sales figures. The 2000s saw Leppard touring constantly as newer generations of rock listeners discovered the band's rich back catalog.
The three month US leg of Def Leppard's 2011 tour will commence in West Palm Beach on June 15.
